basics of outfit construction
Top to bottom, this is my idealistic idea of what I think subconsciously goes through people's minds when they pick out an outfit.
Shirt/ Top: Mood of the outfit. The top is usually the centerpiece of the outfit. Even if the top isn't the centerpiece, it still sets the mood by being neutral and making the main piece of the outfit stand out. For example:
[top is the centerpiece]

[top is neutral and accessories are the centerpiece]

Bottom/ Pants/ Skirt/ Dress: The environment the outfit is being worn in. Jeans imply a casual environment, very short skirts imply parties, dress pants/ trousers imply a work environment.
[ example of environment based bottomwear]

Shoes/ Footwear: What is being accomplished with the outfit. If its combat boots, the outfit is trying to accomplish being a rebel. If its shiny and glittery flats, it depends on the rest of the outfit.

the sneakers imply casual, even though the rest of the outfit is slightly dressy or rebellious (minus the hat)
Accessories/ Necklaces/ Bracelets: Centerpiece OR Balance: Accessories can make or break an outfit. In most cases, they never break an outfit, unless overused to the point that the outfit is gaudy.

Outerwear/ Jackets/ Cardigans: Balance within the outfit. If the top is too strong, the jacket tones it down. Outerwear is usually environment based, but also works with the outfit to accomplish a mood.
Imbalance is also a mood that can be set, for example, below.

\\NOTES
**All pieces work in harmony. With each added or substituted piece, the mood of the outfit is changed.
exceptions to the rule:
Obviously a dress isn't a top and a bottom, its the top AND the bottom.
However, the dress can be considered the top, and the bottom can be whats worn on the legs, or the length of the dress.
Obviously, leggings will imply one thing, and a floor length dress implies another.
THIS IS LARGELY UNDEVELOPED.
have you noticed?
its just theory.
if you have a comment, or enjoyed it, or completely disagree, let me know!

dreaming
Every blogger's dream is to define the current state of fashion, and where they project it will be going. In reality, at the current state that trends move, its literally impossible.
I've come to realize myself that there are simply too many trends, subcultures, and clothes to keep up with.
There is no way at this point in my life I can possibly define all there is to come.
However, I can post my outfit I wore, and compare it to one of my outfits 6 months from now, and see if the trends have moved that much. It is, of course winter at the moment, but I dress in summer clothes almost year round so it shouldn't make a difference really.

state of fashion 2011//2012
This post is basically a reference for myself, and I hope its completely controversial. Most of the terms I'm going to use are going to be made up basically.
This is going to start a war.
This is my opinion.
This is the State of Fashion 2O11//2O12
We live in the post hipster era. The term hipster has died, because culture killed it. You're called a "hipster" if you wear anything remotely fashion-forward. Thus, since its become a popular term, the term is dead. When talking about trends and style, whats in and out, I think a season ahead, not the current season, mostly because by the time people end up writing about the current season, its already over.
Thus, I begin.
Fashion these days is based on Resurrecting the '90s, neopunk, neogrunge, and seapunk. The fashion is mostly punk based, with style focusing on the most hated past trends in the '90s when it was 2005. It might as well be named 2090/punk style for the purposes of this blog post. Icons that come with this is:
- peace signs
- rainbows
- neon pink and blues
- peace signs
- eyes
- pyramids
- anime intended to be used for ironic purposes
- pokemon
- furbys
- aliens
- mickey mouse/disney
- sailor moon
- cheap denims
- stars/ galaxies
- skeletons
- skulls
- bones
- gaming systems, N64, playstation 1
- skinny jeans
- large portions of blacks
- combat boots
- oxfords
- round sunglasses
- spikes on everything
- more denim
- a dollop of leopard and animal prints
- leather jackets
- american flags
so boys and girls, when you're picking an outfit remember:
- think neopunk,
- neogrunge
- resurrect '90s/ 2090
- seapunk is dying, but go there for inspiration if you need to
- all hipsters died in 2011, so you live in the post-hipster era
- remember all these trends were anti-brand, so only wear a label if you're intending to slander it
- hair is meant to be spiked, swooped, or dyed, not safely worn
- if you hate the pattern its perfect
when in doubt:
- black
are you a girl?
- we live in 2012 no one cares if you dress like a guy
are you a guy?
- we live in 2012 no one cares if you have characteristics of womenswear in your outfits
when in doubt:
- black
